Karen Gurine Berentsdtr Imsøy

1855-1888

.

Johan Enoch Villumsen Fjeldskaar

1853-1917

Both were from Spangereid at Lindesnes. Johan Enok was the son of the Sille Tomine Petersdatter and Willum Johnsen (see below), and was born on Flatebø in 1853, later moved to Fjeldskaar and died 1917 (of heart disease). Karen Gurine, the daughter of Martine Christoffersdatter and Berent Elias Christensen (see below), was born on the Gitlevåg in 1855 and died on Flatebø in 1888.

Johan Enok was a fisherman and farmer. He was a resident of the Inner Fjeldskaar (Gnr 162 Bnr 6) where he had cows, and cultivated corn and potatoes. To Fjeldskaar belonged also a rich salmon fishing. There were five fishing spots where people did salmon fishing: Black Hillegarn, Kjødnodden, Yellow Holmen, Big Hillegarn and Dropskjersteinen. Inner Fjeldskaar owned four-fifths of the fishing, outer Fjeldskaar one-fifth.

At the first census in Norway (1801), we find our relative Joen Joensen. He belonged to one of the 2 families on Flatebø. He was then 53 years old, and was married to Anna Tønnesdtr, who was 60 years old. It is not quite certainly that Joen was born on Flatebø, but both his son, grandson, great-grandson (Johan Enok) and his grandson's grandson (Johan Kornelius) was born there. Johan Enok's mother (Sille Thomine Petersdtr) also came from the Flatebø – according to the church records she had a place of residence Fladebø when she was baptized.

Johan Enok and Karen Gurine had 2 children together – Johan Kornelius and Sofie. Karen Gurine died on Flatebø in 1888, the same year that she gave birth to her third child – Villum. He died just 10 hours old. Karen Gurine died the next day afterwards of pneumonia. After Karen Gurine died, Johan Enoch moved to Fjeldskaar. He bought the farm on the Inner Fjeldskaar 31. December 1890.

Below we see an excerpt from the population census in 1865 about Karen Gurine's family. We see that Karen Gurine is the daughter of Bernt Elias Christensen, who was a farmer and homeowner on Imsø. Mother is Martine Christoffersdatter. They were married in 1848. Karen Gurine is at this time (1865) was 11 years, and is at home with 1 sister and 1 brother.

Karen Gurine was born on the Gitlevåg, but grew up on the Imsøy, where her mother came from. Several people from Imsøy were seafaring people, including the brother of Karen Gurine, Christian Immanuel Berntsen, was apparently on the way to the West Indies when the census was conducted in the Western Imsa in 1875.
